Third Annual Philippine American Heritage Picnic set for Aug. 9 at John C. Rudy County Park

To Feature State Rep. Seth Grove, Candidates for office invited, Filipino Folk Dance, Hawaiian Children’s Dance, Cultural Display Booth,  a large assortment of Filipino Food Dishes

The 3rd Annual Heritage Picnic of the Philippine American Heritage Council will be held on Saturday, August 9 from 12 noon to 5 PM, with booth and food tables open for setup at 11 AM, at John C. Rudy County Park, Wren Pavilion in East Manchester Township near Emigsville, PA.

The Third Annual Picnic features State Representative Seth Grove delivering keynote remarks.  All candidates for state and local office who are on the ballot in York, PA are welcome to attend and may request time to speak to the group (the time allocated will be limited).

There will be a Philippines cultural display at the picnic featuring costumes, souvenirs, mementoes, books and other exhibits from or about the Philippines.

The speakers are asked to emphasize in their remarks, what is exceptional about America because the organization is a Philippine AND American Heritage Council.

There will be a large assortment of Filipino food dishes (other cultures are most welcome to bring their foods and there will be barbecue pits for burgers, chicken, hot dogs etc., which attendees may bring).

There will be a popular Filipino Bulaklakan Folk Dance performed by costumed members of the brand new Dance Troupe of the Philippine American Heritage Council. The history of Filipino Folk Dance actually predates the arrival of the Spaniards in the Philippines, which later became part of the United States.

There are many variations of Filipino Folk Dances. “The girls in this dance each hold a garland of leaves and flowers attached to a wire, bamboo or rattan so that the garland will arch when held overhead” (more info here).

The ladies of the Philippine American Heritage Council have been practicing through July at several different York County public parks for their debut performance on August 9. There are plans to continue as a Dance Troupe and applications for new Dancers to join in their practices are welcome.

The Dance Troupe will also entertain requests for performance, with any honorarium to be used to advance the work of the Philippine American Heritage Council.  Individual Dance Troupe members pay for their own costumes and are strictly volunteers in their practice and their performance.

The official program of the picnic begins at 2 PM with speakers, the Bulaklakan Folk Dance and a “Hawaiian Folk Dance” by Filipino-American children.

In addition to the cultural heritage booth featuring exhibits from the Philippines, many members of the Council will be bringing a Philippine dish.

All picnic attendees are asked to bring a dish of their choice in accordance with the schedule listed on the Picnic flyer in accordance with the first letter of their last name, flyer HERE.

There is also an entrance donation requested of $2 per person, maximum for a family $3 (spouse & children). Individuals and companies may be listed as a Sponsor ($12) or Patron ($25) of this 3rd annual Heritage Picnic of the Philippine American Heritage Council.

They will be recognized during the program portion of the picnic and Patrons are entitled to address brief remarks to the picnic. The website for more information is PhilippineAmericanHeritage.org. The group maintains a members-only Facebook page.

The first annual picnic in 2012 featured keynote remarks by Rep. Seth Grove and had 25 in attendance.

The 2nd one last summer of 2013 featured keynote remarks by U.S. Congressman Scott Perry with three candidates for office speaking (all of whom won) and 55 in attendance.  In June, the Philippine American Heritage Council leadership hosted a “Meet and Greet Congressman Scott Perry” dinner buffet at the home of one of their leaders in York County, PA with 35 in attendance.

The Council also promotes other activities of interest to its members, such as other Filipino cultural organizations as far away as Washington, DC, Harrisburg, Baltimore and suburban Philadelphia.
